CHAPTER TEN

My first month or so in Arizona went relatively well. No one from Illinois showed up on my doorstep, and Cynthia hadn’t dragged the Phoenix police into the matter of her missing boyfriend. Even if she did, finding some rando who disappeared in another state wouldn’t be a priority for them. With the giant jacket and sunglasses I’d worn when leaving the bus in Phoenix, I doubt the police would be able to pull usable camera footage from the depot.

It was funny how life worked out. Sure, I had to eat people to stay alive, but at least I wasn’t piling bodies in the street. The fact my bite turned the people I fed on into vampires as soon as I drained them was useful in that regard.

I thought I could figure out how to feed on someone without killing them, but once I started, I couldn’t stop. Now it was all about finding the right people to feed on. God knows finding a shitty human was easier than trying to buy the bagged stuff.

It turned out human blood was super regulated and controlled. Who would have thought scoring a bag of blood would be harder than getting a gram of heroin? The list of people willing to risk their job to help some weirdo with what they assumed was a blood fetish was infinitesimally small. Not even a few hundred bucks would grease those wheels.

Breaking into a blood bank was also off the table. The hospital was the only place with more cameras than the gas station. It was crazy how digital security has grown over the last couple of years. The cost of security cameras had come down enough that more people were using them. Some places even bought fake ones and mounted them. The idea that someone was always watching was enough to make most people do the right thing.

It wouldn’t be long before cameras were so affordable everyone had one. Teenagers worldwide should rebel now, before video evidence of their escapades existed.

Parents of the future were going to have things so easy.

Home security was something only rich people could afford when I was younger. The cops were still going to schools and passing out poison stickers to put on the cleaning products instead of getting kids to sign up for D.A.R.E.

I’d always thought D.A.R.E. was a sneaky way to get kids' fingerprints in the system. What kind of fourth-grader is already screwing around with drugs? It was funny they came at you super early on, then you didn’t hear the drug messaging again until you were a senior in high school. Then they delivered abstinence speeches and horror stories instead of discussing responsible drinking and getting a ride. Those probably would have been smarter since most kids thought they were invincible.

And I thought everyone over age ten saw Footloose.

With the hospitals and blood banks out as far as suppliers went, I thought about paying someone for their blood, but who in the hell would be
